Never exceed your rights, and they will soon become unlimited.—Rousseau.

One of the greatest Philosophers of all time, Rousseau has questioned the assumption that the will of the majority is always correct.

So, when does the will of the majority correct?

When do their rights exceed other's rights?

I dunno the answers to these questions, but the new drive, from the new anti-gay in the US is pathetic. If this is a free nation, modern society, where all are some what free, why is this so hard to let people do what they want if they aren't breaking a law? One can call me as a religious person, I worship one God, the God of all beings, but I don't think God likes me better or more than a gay person, nor does God thinks some of us are better or worse than the other. Our actions, and how we live with others in our life is what makes us who we are.

Here goes to all these religious conservatives!

The difference between them and you is simple, you're the majority and they are the minority. That's it. They are our sons, brothers, sisters, fathers, friends, and to put them down, U put all of us down. How st*pid could these righties be!! Very hateful..........

Dem,
Good post.

I think you are asking two different questions, or I am misunderstanding maybe.

1. When is the good of the General Will a correct justification for an action?
2. When do the rights of the majority superceed the rights of individuals?

1. I would say, "most of the time."
2. I would say, "almost never" and this is one of the reasons why I hate almost all organized religions, becuase they usually hold the religious community's right above personal rights.

I "pray" ( a TON of pun intended) everyday that this country will wake up and smell the religious rights rotten message and control they are laying on our government.

Don't EVEN get me started on the anti-gay sentiment America suffers. I think it is one of the most ridiculous movements in our history.

As a society in general - not everyone, mind you, but the "majority" at the time - we've persecuted, prejudged and limited the rights of pretty much every minority group available. We've already blasted our way through Japanese (circa 1940s WWII "camps" in California and New Mexico); we've hated on Blacks; we're quickly turning against Cubanos, Latinos and Hispanics. Now we're on to gay people. We're quickly turning against the overweight.

Who do we like?!

I think it is crazy that these ultra-religious conservatives are anti-gay. What happened to "love thy neighbor"?! Why do you care who I love behind closed doors? Is my decision to marry the same sex breaking up YOUR marriage?

Religious conservatives will argue that homosexuality degrades the moral fabric of society. I'm sorry, but I personally feel that the junkie on the corner who is using my tax dollars to get a free ride is more detrimental to society than the person who decides to marry someone he/she loves. I feel that kids selling crack and extolling the virtues of drive-bys are more detrimental to society.

But that's just me. So let's go on a witch hunt and see who we can smoke out of the closet. Won't that be fun?!

Sarcastically yours,

Lauren

Very good.

Lauren: "the most ridiculous movements in our history". I think millions of us, agree with U on this.

Apparently there has been a 'brain drain' going on. People are becoming more hostile, and more anti-social, thus, increased a feeling of some to fear they are being left behind, and to show they ain't they do sh*t like this. I don't know what will stop this madness. Always, people believe the lie before they believe the truth, and right-wing America never tells the truth about anything.

My religion is for me, and me only...this should be the case for all, and shouldn't envolve others. PERIOD.

Lol on "Sarcastically yours".

"A... fear they are being left behind"
You hit the nail on the head there, my friend. America is suffering from a fear complex, and the government tends to play on those fears to rationalize their actions.

In the last elections, it was something like 13 states (Ohio included, DAMN!) approved state constitutional amendments that ban same-sex marriages. They are afraid of what they don't understand, or choose not to understand.

Look also at the War on Terror. Pres. Bushwacked used 9/11 to justify the invasion of Afghanistan. A year later, he used "terrorists worldwide" as the justification to invate Iraq. Regardless of the fact that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, Bush played on the heightened emotions and sensitivities of the American people to push his personal agenda.

"Religion is for me.

Well, ideally that should be the case. America was built on the principle that people should be free to live their lives as they see fit. But it was also built by God-fearing men and women whose religion - and lack of religious freedom - drove their emigration. I think, much to the detriment of the future of American politics, people are voting more along religious beliefs than what is truly for the greater good.

Religion is so closely tied to values and morals, and it is values and morals that drive your political preferencs. Religiously-driven politics goes against the whole "separation of Church and State" that we hold dear to us.

Lauren...U hit it in the head again. Government always tends to play certain issues so people don't really think reationaly as they should.......this anti-gay is part of this...
