It's truly unbelievable.

I had a night class, so I didn't get the chance to see the President Bush's State of the Union live, so I have just finished watching some of the highlights. To him, millions of Americans losing their jobs(Ford; announced that it will cut 35,000 jobs, while Dell announced it will add another 5,000 jobs to its already 15,000 jobs in India) is no concern, to him, Iraq is the safest place on earth, to him, elections in Latin America where the raise of so many anti-American governments have came to power is no concern, to him, what's happening in Iran, North Korea, Palestine, and Iraq are part of spreading freedom, to him, students like me losing their student loans is just another number, to him, the fact that the average wages have been declining in the past 5 years is part of greatest economic growth the world has ever seen, to him, Katrina didn't happen(He did not mention Katrina or what to do for the millions of people effected by it), to him, he doesn't real care what he's saying, he knows these wingnuts will vote for him no matter what, so he doesn't even try to tell the country the truth. We are in the midst of war, recession and chaos in Iraq, but watching him tonight all is well. Every speech he gives, Bush just said to congress and to us - We can always outdo your worst expectations, and we will.

Look outside my window tonight. It is so white, so snowy. It has been snowing last few hours. I never liked snow, but tonight it looks very cool..........it ain't even that cold.......

How are the colors? Let me know if they are hard to read!!!

Dem,

Colors are fine. Does one just use HTML tags to do that?

Bush keeps on touting, "We are spreading Democacry blah, blah, blah" but what happens now that these newly US made "Democratic" countries are electing extreme theocratic rulers?

Yeah, great job you moron.

The RNC should all commit suicide for nominating not someone who actually would be a good president, but one that would get elected.

America has become a large herd of sheep, it's too bad.

While I agree with the general discussion, I think that it is worth noting that Bush is only what bubbled to the top and not necessarily the root cause of countries ills after all he is only there because he shares and personifies the views of unfortunately a majority of people in our country (At least he did during election time). These views in my opinion are what need to be challenged directly. Views like religion, family values, racism, nationalism etc. And unfortunate I think we are in need of more than a just a political party change, we are in need of an entire paradigm shift, but I agree party change is a step in the right direction.

Although Dem, I might have to dissent on the topic of job loss to outsourcing(I am a fan of outsourcing)

PS. Dem.
I love the pics that you post here..for your love of photography and political views you may enjoy this book http://www.globecorner.com/t/t42/21011.php it is a very unique perspective both in the photos and environmentally conscience writing about them check it out a your local book store.

Rocketstar...Thanks for your comment....No U can just highlight the part of the texts you want to be in colors and go to the colors(Large T) tag and select the color you want......Agree with U on all the things U said....

Brian, I agree with U, those of us who don't support the agenda of the GOP should attack their views, like religion, family values, racism, nationalism.....And this is where the liberals which I belong, have failed. Perhaps the best strategy now is go after their main ideas which have put us back in another 100 years..and It all starts from the grassroots to pick one issue at a time, and elect one liberal at the time...

How come your fan of Outsourcing? For me, I ain't only looking this side of the isle, but also these Chinese and Indian labors who are making few dollars an hour, but have to endure so much hardship that labor used in the states back in the days......I'm big time labor supporter, no matter which nation in the world......Mark my words, this outsourcing issue will get out of hands, and will be populist election issue in 08.

Thanks man on the link, I will check it out...

We are open to healthy discussion right? Let me know if comments like these are too long and belong in another discussion forum

I support outsourcing because in the long run at least from an economic standpoint it is beneficial to the country as whole, we want to shed manufacturing jobs, and low level service jobs so that we can focus on ever increasing complex tasks. Now is this beneficial to the line man at ford who just got fired...no. But is it beneficial to the country as a whole if he can get retrained to do something else? yes.

What is at stake is Americas ability to compete in the global marketplace. If we do not carve out an advantage though outsourcing to make the best products at the lowest price we will be left behind by the countries who do this better..

Outsourcing is good because we are not graduating enough hard science majors (engineering, IT, Biology etc.) to full the gap of jobs being created in the new knowledge based economy, outsourcing allows the US to augment staff.

Outsourcing is over rated as a problem most jobs are outsourced to other companies in the US. We are looking at this problem from a nationalistic point of view saying that they are taking something from us and we should stop it and that is obscene, software has eliminated more US jobs than outsourcing, but we don't see protests at the stores selling Turbo Tax?

As for the other side of the isle, almost our entire IT staff is from India and they love the idea of outsourcing. It brings opportunity, capital, infrastructure, training etc..I could try to ask someone from India to weigh in on this if you would like? Probably will carry more weight coming from their perspective.

I am for labor, but what that means to me is different, I am for educational grants to displaced workers, increased incentives for hard science majors, H1B visa limits extended in amount and duration, allow more immigration, naturalize all illegal immigrants in this country so they they can get healthcare, education, and pay equality. etc.

I am not for the unions however and as someone who works for an auto giant I can tell you that the unions time is over and they are harming more jobs then they are protecting.

Yes! They are good man, keep them coming....

Ok, first I'm with labor 100%, no matter what, in here or in India. Unlike you I don't think Union work is done, we need them now more than ever. Second, I'm not looking this on nationalistic point of view, I'm looking through what this has done to moms/dads little stores on the corners. Plus, as U said, since this ain't alone to India, I would also ask others to give their views on this, how people are treated under these large companies?. I'm in IT education, so Yes, I work with Indian and Chinese students from India and China every week, and many of them are here at the UofM, and happy to see them taking advantage on this. Also, I'm aware that many IT oriented Indians have taken advantage IT jobs in the TC areas, good for them, but what about the man making un-skilled work, factory jobs, producing little shoes in little towns, and other goods by few cents in india or they don't count......We know what these gaint orgs do, when they don't have to worry about strict rules and laws to protect the weak. On immigrants, and other things I agree with you. We need to naturalize all immigrants and stop trying to say they will take our jobs.......I wasn't happy when our governor came out few weeks ago, and said immigration is problem in MN? MN and immgration, is he kidding me!!! He's trying to make this an election issue in this year.........what a nut...

As far as I am aware, companies like Nike for instance, pay Bangladeshies an average to above avergae wage for that particlur area. Now that wage is obviously A LOT lower than Nike would pay an American, but shouldn't the wage be on the local economies scale?

I understand that there are companies that do take advantage of foreign sweat shops etc... which is morally reprehensible.

In todays truly global economy, outsourcing is the future of successfull companies. The US will continue to become the "Servicing" nation and less of a manufacturing nation as other 3rd world nations make progress.

The key is to try to find a way that works and respects all in this ever chnaging process.

Unfortuantely the governments of some of these third world nations do not do enough to enfore labor laws etc...

Thanks Dem this is great. I wish more discussion like this was taking place across the country.

In regards to mom and pop..You have to remember though that development is dynamic. As large box stores become prevalent( the assumption is that stores are lost and some probably are) we also see rebellion. In real life people strive for differentiation if we use our great city an example we saw the rise of the box big corporation stores in the 90's (Mall of America, Wal-Mart's, Targets etc.) but as people became discussed with the homogenization of their world consumers rebelled and we had the rise of 50th and France Boutiques, Lake Street Revitalization etc. Now there are actually more boutique\start-ups\mom and pop stores in our city than there was before.

This really shows the power is in the hands of the consumers.....business can't provide services or goods that consumers don't pay for. If you want to change labor practices it starts with shopping. Consumers are able to do more for workers of the world than any union ever will be able to.

Rocketstar, that's ok, I will add U too.....

"Unfortuantely the governments of some of these third world nations do not do enough to enfore labor laws etc..." Rocketstar, this is what I mean when I say, outsourcing is more bad for these poor nations....workers....plus the illegal immigrants who would have done the same work...

We have to agree to disagree on labor unions....may be you should read my New York "Union Strike" Post to see why I'm always for labor. Labor has always been part of my life, since the day I was born, both my parents have been labor organizers, so my take on labor my be different on many peoples experiences or what they hear from anti-labor groups.

Brian, labor ain't dead, principles and rights of all workers are protected by them, without them getting any credit or anyone knowing. Driving in 35W everyday, teachers, police, firefighters, nurses, are all under labor unions.....they fight for U and me.......and should always have our respect. The force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest wages the world has ever known and has brought many of us to be closer to the realization of importance of one being paid what they deserve, not what the employer thinks you should be paid, and how they will deal with the U.

Man the trafic in Lake Street was very bad for very long time.....I agree the city has done great work on many parts of the city, kuddos to the mayor Rybak and city council members....all the revitalization that has been going on in many parts of the city, corner of University-Central Ave and Lake Street have all being done with small stores in to the heart. But says nothing about what Target and Wallmart have done to the small chains. Yes it starts with shoping, that's why i don't shop on them........
